Shop Switchboard Renovation

We rebuilt a shop's distribution board with Siemens equipment. Every circuit now has its own breaker, and a residual current device protects against electric shock and fire.

What is a switchboard renovation?

A switchboard renovation brings an existing distribution board up to current safety needs. Worn breakers are replaced, missing protective devices are added, wiring is tidied and circuits are reconnected so that each one is protected separately. In this project we renewed a shop's three-phase board entirely with Siemens protective devices.

What is inside the board and what does it do?

  • C20 three-pole main breaker: Switches all three incoming phases together. It isolates the whole shop for safe maintenance and is the first layer of protection against overcurrent and short circuits.
  • 40A / 30mA residual current device (four-pole): Cuts the supply within milliseconds when current leaks to earth, for example when someone touches a live part or a cable's insulation is damaged. The 30mA sensitivity is intended to protect human life and also reduces the risk of fire caused by leakage current.
  • 3 × B10 miniature circuit breakers: For circuits with lower loads, typically lighting.
  • 11 × B16 miniature circuit breakers: Protect socket and appliance circuits individually. If one circuit faults or overloads, only that circuit trips and the rest of the shop keeps running.
  • Neutral and earth bars: Blue neutral and green-yellow earth conductors are collected neatly on separate bars. Proper earthing is essential for the residual current device to work reliably.

Why renovate a switchboard?

Older boards often have no residual current device, many circuits share a single breaker and the wiring is untidy. In a business, this means one fault can shut down the whole shop, breakers trip frequently, and the risk of electric shock and electrical fire rises. A renovated board means:

  • Each circuit has its own breaker and faults are easy to locate,
  • Staff and customers are protected against leakage current,
  • A single fault does not stop the whole business,
  • The installation meets the residual current protection required by Turkish wiring regulations.
